From hearty comfort food to delicate pastries, this diverse region offers a wide range of dishes that will leave you craving for more. Craft Cocktails

When it comes to craft cocktails, London is a city that knows how to shake, stir, and create libations that are truly a work of art. From hidden speakeasies to elegant rooftop bars, the city is teeming with craft cocktail bars that cater to every taste. World renowned mixologists showcase their flair and expertise, transforming spirits into exquisite concoctions that tantalize the senses.

Five of the Top 50 Cocktail Bars in the World are in London, Connaught Bar, Tayer +Elementary, Satan's Whiskers, A Bar with Shapes for a Name, and Scartes Bar. Whether you're in the mood for a classic Negroni expertly crafted with house-infused spirits, an innovative cocktail that surprises and delights, London's craft cocktail bars offer a haven for those seeking unique and exceptional libations. My favorite is the Grandfather of all Cocktail Bars and a past winner of the #1 Cocktail Bar in the World, the American Bar at the Savoy. If you are in Cardiff definitely enjoy a libation at The Alchemist. There are Alchemists throughout the United Kingdom and defintely worth seeking out, if you are a craft cocktail fan.

Sticky Toffee Pudding

Sticky toffee pudding is a quintessential British dessert that is sure to leave you in a state of pure bliss with every decadent bite. This indulgent delight consists of a moist, sponge-like cake made with dates and drizzled with a luscious toffee sauce. The combination of rich, caramel flavors and the soft, velvety texture creates a mouthwatering sensation that is both comforting and utterly irresistible. Whether enjoyed warm with a dollop of creamy vanilla ice cream or served elegantly with a creamy custard, sticky toffee pudding embodies the epitome of indulgence. Quite honestly, I get Sticky Toffee Pudding whenever I see it on the menu and I have never had a bad one.

Haggis

Haggis, a unique and traditional Scottish dish, is a culinary adventure for those seeking bold and distinctive flavors. Made from a blend of sheep's heart, liver, and lungs, mixed with onions, oatmeal, suet, and a variety of herbs and spices, haggis's distinct taste brings together a combination of earthy, savory, and peppery notes. Encased in a sheep's stomach, haggis is traditionally boiled, creating a rich, meaty texture that is both tender and flavorful.

This iconic dish is often enjoyed alongside neeps (turnips) and tatties (mashed potatoes), accompanied by a generous pour of whisky. While haggis might seem adventurous, it is a testament to Scotland's culinary heritage and has become a symbol of national pride. Unsure if Haggis is for you, try the Haggis BonBons at the Royal Mile Tavern in Edinburgh. In London, try the Haggis Scotch Egg at the Jugged Hare. In Cardiff, they are often on the menu at the Potted Pig. When you are at the Potted Pig, make sure you get Sticky Toffee Pudding for dessert.

Treat yourself to a quintessentially British affair with an afternoon tea experience. Delicate finger sandwiches, scones with clotted cream and jam, and a selection of sweet pastries and cakes are served alongside a steaming pot of tea. It's an elegant and leisurely way to enjoy a mid-afternoon break. In London, check out the The Afternoon Tea at The Dorchester. In Dublin( not part of the United Kingdom but a great add on to a trip from Wales, Scotland or England) try the Afternoon Tea at The Shelbourne. In Cardiff enjoy Pettigrew Tea Room.

Sunday Roast

Join the locals in their Sunday tradition of a hearty roast dinner. Succulent roasted meat, accompanied by fluffy Yorkshire pudding, roast potatoes, seasonal vegetables, and a rich gravy, is the epitome of comfort food. Make sure to save room for a decadent dessert afterward. The Savoy Grill by Gordon Ramsay has the best splurge Sunday Roast. For a more moderately priced version check out Blacklock with several Pubs throughout London.

Bangers and Mash

Bangers and mash, a beloved classic in British cuisine, is a dish that brings comfort and satisfaction in every forkful. I first had Bangers and Mash on the train from London to St. Andrews, Scotland. It was love at first bite. Consisting of flavorful sausages (bangers) served atop a bed of creamy mashed potatoes, this hearty dish embodies the essence of comfort food. The bangers, often made from succulent pork or beef, are complemented by the smooth and buttery mashed potatoes, creating a delightful harmony of flavors and textures. To elevate the dish, a rich onion gravy is often poured generously over the sausages and potatoes, adding a savory depth that ties it all together.

One taste is all it takes to understand why it has stood the test of time and remains an enduring favorite among British food enthusiasts. You find Bangers and Mash on most pub menus throughout the United Kingdom and Ireland. In London try Mother Mash, and get their sticky toffee pudding as well. In Edinburgh, stop in at the Royal Mile Tavern for their Bangers and Mash.

The United Kingdom offers a rich tapestry of flavors and culinary delights that will satisfy all palates. From the traditional dishes that evoke a sense of nostalgia to the modern international creations, these countries and Ireland have something for everyone. So, make sure to embark on a gastronomic journey and discover the mouthwatering must-try foods that define the United Kingdom's vibrant food scene. Bon appétit!
