Historical Background of Vancouver

Vancouver and the surrounding area was originally inhabited by the indigenous Coast Salish people, who had lived in the region for thousands of years. The first Western Europeans arrived in 1791 and British Captain George Vancouver arrived in 1792. Vancouver's modern history can be traced back to the early 19th century when the city was first established as a small logging settlement. In the 1860s, the city began to grow as a result of the Fraser Gold Rush, which brought an influx of settlers and prospectors to the region.

The city was officially incorporated in 1886 and was named after British naval officer George Vancouver, who had explored the area in the late 18th century. Over the next few decades, Vancouver quickly transformed from a small logging town into a bustling metropolitan center, thanks to the arrival of the Canadian Pacific Railway in 1887. Chinese immigrants were the first Asians to arrive. They came to work on the construction of the railway. This event marked a significant turning point in the city's history, as it connected Vancouver to the rest of Canada and the world, facilitating trade and commerce.

Throughout the 20th century, Vancouver continued to grow and evolve, becoming a hub for diverse industries, including fishing, forestry, and technology. The city also played a significant role during World War II, serving as a major shipbuilding and aircraft manufacturing center. Today, Vancouver is known for its culture, stunning natural landscapes, and thriving economy, making it one of the most livable cities in the world. The city's rich history and ongoing transformation have contributed to its unique character and appeal, attracting visitors from around the globe.

Exploring Culinary Delights in Vancouver, British Columbia

Steam Works Brewing Company, Our first taste of Vancouver on the Gastown Food Tour

Gastown History and Food Tour

First, let me set the scene for you. Imagine a crisp, sunny day in the heart of Gastown, one of Vancouver’s oldest and most iconic neighborhoods. We joined the Gastown Historic Walking Food Tour and from the outset, we were whisked into a culinary journey like no other. This isn’t your typical food tour; it’s a vibrant walk through history, paired with some of the best bites the city has to offer.

Our guide, Sean, was outstanding, with an infectious enthusiasm for both food and history. We met at the Metro Station. Our first stop was at a historic brewery, Steamworks Brewing Company, where we sampled some local brews. I especially like the gummie bear infusion beer, ok, I am not mush of a beer connoisseur. This is the only time I consumed a glass of beer in my life. Next up, we ventured into a Guu Izakaya, which gave us a taste of Vancouver's Japanese history.

We made a stop at the famous Gastown Steam Clock, an absolute must-see with its whimsical charm. From there, we zigzagged through cobbled streets and rustic brick buildings, learning about the roots of Gastown, all while our senses were tantalized by the aromas wafting from nearby eateries.

And just when I thought it couldn’t get any better, we found ourselves in a cozy pub, sipping on red wine and nibbling on poutine, a Canadian specialty of French Fries and brown gravy. The mix of tastes and textures was just out of this world! We wrapped up the tour with a visit to a sweet little gelato shop where we were treated to creamy, rich flavors. We capped off our journey with a stop for dessert Waffles and Whipped Cream. Yum.

The Surrey Spice Trail

But the adventure didn’t end there! The next day, we explored the  Surrey's Spice Trail,. If you’re someone who loves bold and exotic flavors, then this is an absolute must experience. Surrey is a suburb of Vancouver and a melting pot of culture. The Spice Trail is a celebration of this diversity through cuisine.

This was a press trip with ten fellow travel writers and their spouses. We boarded the bus with the destination management company for Surrey with an eager appetite. My goal was to discover the flavors of the small family owned restaurants along this trail. Our first stop was Raunak Indian Cuisine, where the aroma of spices was simply intoxicating. We indulged Amritsari Kulcha, a flatbread stuffed with potatoes, onions, cauliflower, paneer (Indian cheese ) and spices. It is often served for breakfast, accompanied by Chole Masala (chickpeas in a tangy gravy and spices). This flavor filled deliciousness danced happily on my palate.

Next, we were greeted by the welcoming aroma of exotic spices and decor that transported us to the lush landscape of Kerala, India, as we entered Kerala Kitchen. Named after the owners hometown, the menu is a treasure trove of culinary delights. We feasted on the Fish Pollichathu in Banana Leaf, Dosa, and Beef Ularthiyathu. The Fish Pollichathu arrived beautifully presented in a fragrant banana leaf, with tender fish marinated in a delectable blend of spices and herbs. It was one of my favorite dishes of the day.

Spice Trail, Surry, British Columbia, Canada,Culinary Explorations
Momo are Nepali dumplings, steamed and bursting with spiced meat or veggie fillings,.

As we continued along the trail, stepping into Katmandu Bar & Grill felt like embarking on a flavorful adventure to the heart of Nepal. The aroma of their famous Momo captivated my senses. These delightful Nepali dumplings, steamed and bursting with spiced meat or veggie fillings, are little pockets of joy. Equally impressive are the Jhol Momo, served in a rich, tangy broth that adds an extra layer of warmth and comfort to the dish.. We had the opportunity to try some traditional South Asian sweets that were delicate and bursting with pistachio and rose water flavors, a true delight for anyone with a sweet tooth.

One of the highlights of the Spice Trail was Clove the Art of Dining. It is an experience filled with exotic flavors and a warm, inviting atmosphere that truly embodies the essence of fine dining. The moment we stepped through the door, we were greeted by the welcoming staff who made us feel at home right away. The restaurant exudes a modern charm with hints of traditional elegance, perfect for both date night dining and special occasions.Their menu is a delightful journey through Indian cuisine, where each dish is carefully crafted to balance spices and textures. One of my favorites was the Duck Rajasthani, which boasts tender duck meat in a rich, spicy gravy that excites the palate.

Throughout both the Gastown Food Tour and the Surrey Spice Trail, what stood out to me was not just the amazing food but also the stories, traditions, and cultures behind each dish. Meeting the passionate chefs and listening to their stories added a depth to the experience that made it unforgettable. Unmissable Activities When Time Allows

As often is the case when we travel, I had more sightseeing on my list than time allows. This was definitely the case for our short visit to Vancouver. Here are the things on my list that we did not get to see or do. Hopefully your visit to Vancouver will be longer than ours and you will have the opportunity to check out some of the attractions and activities below.

Exploring the Scenic Hiking Trails of Vancouver, British Columbia

Must See, Things to do, British Columbia, Canada
Natural Beauty Abounds in Vancouver

Vancouver is located between the Pacific Ocean and the Coast Mountains, it offers some of the most breathtaking hiking experiences on the planet. I was so sorry we did not have the opportunity to lace up our hiking boots and hit the trails. Here are several trails I would like to hike when we return.

The first trail we would like to try is the short but steep Grouse Grind. As you climb, you’re surrounded by lush, dense forest, and when you finally reach the summit, you’re treated to a panoramic view of Vancouver, the sparkling ocean, and, on a clear day, the distant Vancouver Island.

For something more laid-back, there’s the Lighthouse Park in West Vancouver. This park boasts several trails that wind through magnificent, towering trees and lead to the iconic Point Atkinson Lighthouse. The coastal views here are stunning. Picture this, rocky shores, crashing waves, and the lighthouse standing tall against a backdrop of brilliant blue skies.

Then there’s the serene beauty of Lynn Canyon. This place is a more tranquil escape with its network of trails that take you through beautiful forests, over the thrilling suspension bridge, and alongside cascading waterfalls. The Twin Falls trail sounds perfect if you’re looking for a shorter, picturesque hike.

Lastly, do not overlook the Pacific Spirit Regional Park right in the city near UBC. It offers a myriad of trails to explore, suitable for everyone from leisurely walkers to avid bikers. The park's dense forest is a magnificent embodiment of West Coast rainforest, and walking here feels like stepping into a serene, green wonderland. It’s particularly great for those moments when you need a quick nature fix without leaving the city limits.

Every trail comes with its own set of adventures and discoveries. So if you ever find yourself with time for hiking in this part of the world, I wholeheartedly recommend accessing your AllTrails App, a good pair of hiking shoes, and diving into the natural splendor that Vancouver has to offer.
