If you're in search of a coastal escape that combines stunning natural beauty, delightful restaurants, and cozy places to stay, look no further than Morro Bay, California. Nestled on California's central coast, this quaint town offers a perfect blend of outdoor adventure and laid-back charm. CaptK and I spent 2 nights exploring Morro Bay as part of our Pacific Coast Wine Adventure. After disembarking from the Discovery Princess in Los Angeles, we rented a car and drove up the coast to Morro Bay.
This seaside town had long been on my California "must do" list. I discovered so many gems that I knew I had to share the magic with you all. We used our 2 nights to decompress after a whirlwind 7 days of exploring and wine tasting our way through British Columbia and California. Morro Bay in October has a relaxed, multicultural, old California vibe that we loved. Here is how to make the most of your time in this beautiful seaside haven!
Discovering the Great Outdoors:
Morro Bay, California, is a charming coastal town known for its beautiful beaches, scenic landscapes, and abundant wildlife. You can spend hours wandering along the Embarcadero watching the sea lions play in the water or searching for whales while strolling along the beach. The natural world beckons you at every corner.
Morro Bay Dune Trail
On our first morning, we laced up our hiking boots and headed straight to the Morro Bay Dune Trail. This scenic hike is a must for nature lovers, offering breathtaking views of the bay and its iconic Morro Rock. The trail winds through a mix of coastal dunes and vibrant salt marshes teeming with wildlife. I can't emphasize enough how uplifting it was to breathe in the salty air while watching pelicans glide gracefully overhead. Don't forget your camera as the photo opportunities are endless! You can find this hike on Alltrails. It is appropriate for all skill levels.

Or walk around the DSRV Avalon, one of only two cold-war era rescue submarines developed by the US Navy and featured in the 1990 film Hunt for Red October and the 2018 film Hunter Killer. You can also see a USCG Surf Rescue Boat that was stationed at the small boat station and serviced the sometimes impassable Morro Bay harbor entrance.
